Buying peat – what you should know
Buying peat depends a lot on what the peat is needed for and in how large quantities. A single horse stable needs different amounts than an industrial plant or a greenhouse grower. This guide goes through the options for buying peat in Finland.
Where can you buy peat?
1. Directly from a peat producer
Most peat for professional use is bought directly from peat producers. This is the most affordable option, especially for larger quantities, because there are no middlemen. The producer can tailor deliveries, packaging and schedule to your needs.
Tainikoski Oy delivers peat directly to farms, greenhouse businesses and industrial plants in Northern and Central Finland. Export deliveries to Europe are handled through the ports of Kemi and Oulu.
2. Agricultural supply and garden stores
Smaller quantities – such as individual baled peat or small cubic batches – are often available from stores selling agricultural supplies (e.g. Agrimarket, Hankkija) or from garden and hardware stores. This suits individual horse stables or home gardens.
3. Hardware stores and DIY chains (K-Rauta, Bauhaus)
Garden peat (fertilised horticultural peat) is sold to consumers in large supermarkets and hardware stores. These batches are typically 50–200 litre bags for the home garden.
Peat pack sizes and delivery formats
The pack size affects both the price and suitability. The most common formats are:
- Large bale – about 2.5 m³, the most common packaging of bedding peat for horse and cattle farms
- Small bales – about 0.2–0.4 m³, easy to handle by hand, suitable for smaller stables
- Bulk delivery – by truck directly to a warehouse or silo, the most affordable for large users
- Big bags – about 1 m³, often used for horticultural peat
- Consumer bags – 50–300 litres, sold in garden and hardware stores
How much peat do you need – rough estimates
- Horse – about 1–2 large bales per month, depending on the size of the stable and the bedding method
- Dairy cow – about 0.5–1 large bales per month
- Greenhouse 1,000 m² – varies by crop and method; orders are usually placed seasonally
- Fuel peat – calculated by energy content, typically in loose tonnes
